Nursing theories are the building blocks of the profession and they help nurses to know the rationale for what they do and the reason why the do it. This has portrayed nurses in good light as intelligent people. Theories serve as the basic principles that lead the way for nurses. They can apply these in caring for their patient and explain the rationale and on what basis they take certain actions. They are dependable in the communities and serve as the repertoire of knowledge where ever they are in the society.

The theory of dorothea orem comes to mind while at work we use this to give assistance to those who need either total and partial care. Through the use of theories, I have made my colleagues in the unit to get journals for reflective thinking. We have been recording most of the happenings and nursing care of patient for us to reflect on and look at what works best for patients.

Through observations nurses can develop theories either in clinical practice or in education.George (2002) explained the importance of theories to the nurse. They assist in predicting everyday experience.it also helps to evaluate the care nurses render.it should be developed together with nurses in the clinical areas so that they would benefit from it.
