A healthy and safe environment is the most important factor in early childhood centers. Children cannot optimally develop in an unhealthy environment. There are many childhood diseases and illnesses that can be spread without a clear set of procedures for everyone. Frequent handwashing for the children and staff is an important way to reduce the spread of germs. Educating the parents and children in healthy practices and procedures develops a wonderful line of communication between the center and the home. Children who feel safe are able to explore and experience the environment without the stress and worries of being hurt or injured. I believe the procedures for transportation prevented the corporation from having any incidents of child being left on a bus.
One of the most interesting workshops I taught was on health and safety. During the workshop, I asked the staff to crawl around on the floor and look for things that could be interesting and hazardous for young children. Afterwards, we discussed each item and how it could impact the children, parents and staff. The discussion was very enlightening for everyone. No one realized how many different items could be a safety or health issue for young children that we do not think about. One of the most precarious items was the contents of the purses and bags of the staff and parents.
My CPR and First Aid certifications give me the knowledge and confidence in my abilities to assist a child in an emergency. The confidence enables me to give children the room to explore and experience the environment safely. Accidents can happen anywhere therefore having the knowledge to react in a calm supportive manner is reassuring to the parents, and children I care for. The confidence the parents have in my abilities and knowledge to educate and care for their child each day contributes to classroom’s overall
