In the book Wall and Piece by Banksy, a famous graffiti artist, said within the book “The greatest crimes in the world are not committed by people breaking the rules but by people following the rules. It's people who follow orders that drop bombs and massacre villages.” (Banksy). This relates to the topic because those within the Nazi regime blindly followed the orders they were given and thought nothing of the consequences that would follow. Rudolf Hoess was the commander of the Auschwitz concentration camp and was a SS officer while also being a high ranking Nazi official. The Oath Takers were worker and others that had to swear fidelity to Hitler and the Nazi regime. Both were guilty for what they did or in some cases didn’t do. The …show more content…
As he said in the trials “SS men were not supposed to think about these things; it never even occurred to us” (Hoess). In this quote we see that SS men did not think about their actions just that they were doing them. This is not a good thing because this meant that they would kill without questioning it, which is an act against humanity. Since he committed a crime against humanity he is responsible for his crime and led to the outcome of the war. For these reasons Rudolf Hoess was more responsible for the outcomes of the war than the Oath Taker was. He blindly followed orders which led to millions of people being killed, he did not do anything to stop the killing of Jews in Auschwitz, he didn’t try to save any Jews, and he did not oppose the Nazi views. While some might argue that the Oath taker might be more responsible for the outcomes of the Holocaust for the same reasons as Rudolf Hoess, that is not quite true since the Oath taker wanted to save Jews. While he didn’t actually do so he wanted to. That is more than can be said for Rudolf Hoess who didn’t even think about doing so.
