Communication is used in many different forms daily. We need communication to understand one another, in the working environment, educational environment and home based environment. Sign language, language, verbal communication, non-verbal communication and eye contact are just a few of the many different styles of communicating.

As a group we had to take notes on what we observed in the environment’s we chosen. We had to visit five public locations in Hostos community college located in the Bronx. I have to explain my personal experience of what I saw on this assignment of observe non-verbal communication.

The maintenance came out of the elevator with a big blue garbage bin and everyone moved out the way as he came out of the elevator. The elevator is a little larger than a normal size square elevator. There are exiting doors on both side of the elevator. Everyone had their own space within the elevator. No one wants anyone up on them in small proximity especially in elevators, trains, buses and parties.
It was apparent in this setting non-verbal communication was proxemics. What was odd was people really did not want to move from their spot as people got on and off of the elevator. The majority of the people on the elevator was texting, no one made eye contact with each other. My group stood out on the elevator we were the only three with notebooks out taking notes and looking around. People were looking at us like we were weird. I picked this location because I knew it would a lot more non-verbal than verbal communication. I also wanted to compare the men’s bathroom to the women’s bathroom. It’s more non-verbal communication than verbal in a man’s bathroom opposed to a woman. There was one person in the bathroom looking in the mirror putting on mascara as we walked into the bathroom. The bathroom was very quiet and clean. There is one handicap stall and three regular stalls. I noticed the non-verbal communication between me and Patricia and I. she had to use the bathroom, she asked me to hold her belongings without verbally expressing so. I automatically held my arms out as she was preparing to pass it to me. Patricia came out the stall washed her hands and started observing. A girl walked in she went into the first stall and I believe it did not have any tissue. She went into the second one and immediately came back out. She into the third stall Patricia was in. I took that non-verbal language as if something was wrong with that
