If music be the food of love, play on, as said by the Duke Orsino in the first lines. Love plays a big part in the Shakespeare play Twelfth Night. Shakespeare always includes love in different ways, such as love triangles or even by leaving it to the reader to find out. Twelfth Night, by William Shakespeare, is a comedy about 3 completely different characters falling in love for one another. Shakespeare’s comedies usually start with multiple deaths, and end in multiple marriages. Shakespeare draws attention to love in the play by highlighting various forms of love, such as friendly, sibling, and obsessive Friendly love is selfless and light hearted and is best illustrated through the relationship between Maria and Olivia. Maria is always putting Olivia’s matters and feelings before anyone else's. This indicates how much Maria cares for her mistress. An example would be when Maria is justifying to Feste why he needs to be more mindful when it comes to being late. Olivia already thinks of Feste as the fool. In a way, she is also trying to make sure Feste will not get into any trouble. Maria makes sure everyone keeps their act together and they respect Olivia. Obsessive love in this play simply means you can’t get someone of your mind. A very clear example is when Olivia begs Cesario to stay with her while they are in the garden. She has such a deep love for him that she feels like part of her heart has been ripped out when Cesario is not with her. Another representation of this form of love is when Cesario reports to Duke Orsino that Olivia can not love him, and he most definitely will not take no as answer. The Duke eats, sleeps, and breathes for Olivia, but he can’t face the fact that Olivia can not, and will not, love him. Most of the characters in Twelfth Night are in some type of obsessive
