The Occoquan River feeds into the Potomac River Woodbridge Va. The drainage area stretches west of Gainesville , north to Dulles and south to Quantico marine corps base and covers a mix of mostly suburban and farm land. There are many parks situated in the drainage area, some of the largest are Bull Run, Manassas Battlefield Park, and Fountainhead Regional Park. All these parks are situated along the Occoquan River and are connected by a trail that runs through each of them along the river all the way to Woodbridge.
The soil of this region is primarily of the Ultisol variety with high clay content. During heavy flash rains there is usually flooding in certain areas and very little water absorption. Due to the high summer temperatures there is high evaporation and humidity that also contribute to poor water absorption. The large development that has occurred in this area only adds to the large amount of water runoff.
The chart data shows the usual water deficit that happens during the summer months. With winter brings a higher frequency of rains storms and less snow due to the mild climate.
