The occupational therapy practitioner interview assignment for client communication & engagement in the therapeutic process was a great assignment to get out and interact with a local occupational therapist. I enjoyed this opportunity as I have not met many occupational therapists here in Arizona since moving here in August. For this assignment I partnered with Mark and interviewed a friend of his who is an occupational therapist. The occupational therapist we interviewed was David Waltman. David works at Honor Health Hospital- Osborn Campus who has been a practicing therapist for six years. David works with a wide array of patients as he is a member of the acute care team at Honor Health Hospital – Osborn Campus. He said that he has always worked in acute care, while sparingly working in acute rehab, and consistently works with clients from the neuro, ICU, trauma, med-surg, and telemetry departments. We began this transition by asking David what his personal definition of occupational therapy is. He said that occupational therapists strive to maximize function in individuals with disabilities or illness, by focusing on daily living skills, ADLs and occupations. When we asked David to then talk to us about what he likes about being an OT he sarcastically answered “I love answering student questions about being an OT” to rib us a little bit about being so formal and getting through all of these questions before we were able to talk about sports, beer and our personal aspirations within the profession. Yet, he did give us meaningful aspects that he enjoys in his career. He said that he really enjoys treating patients from various fields as he loves to see their journey. The progress from ICU to acute to acute rehab and hopefully walking out the door is what makes his job
