Nigel likes to have kids but they would eventually turn into slaves in the future. It is hard for him to see his kids turn into slaves because he knew that they soon would suffer as slaves. Nigel knew how much he has suffered as a slave and his kids will suffer just like him. It hurts him that his kids would be tortured and be discriminated in the future. Even though the slave owners didn’t buy the kids, they were still considered their slaves because their slaves gave birth to them. This would be great for the slave owners since they were able to get free slaves, but unfair to the slave since they would be opressed. It is unfair that the slave children would know what it is like to be oppressed and discriminated.

Dana didn’t want to be the one taking care of Rufus’ mother because if anything happens to her, Dana would be the one that would get blamed for. After Dana saw how Rufus treated her when Weylin died, she was afraid that Rufus would punish her worse if mother died since he liked his mother better.
