Slavery was abolished in 1865 under the 13th amendment which was approved by president, Abraham Lincoln. Slavery was an issue in the past in which blacks were not able to attain the same rights that whites had in which seemed to be resolved by abolishment of slavery in general. But what if, a form a racial slavery still exists in today’s world, causing minorities to not be able to attain the same equal rights that they were promised? This can cause a crippling effect which results in minorities class being affected in a negative way. Due to the inequalities faced by many slaves, they were unable to have the same opportunities as others, ultimately effecting their lives in a negative manner as well. Butler shows fear of being caught reading because of the fact she was an African American and they were allowed to read or become educated back before slavery was abolished. She, along with the other slaves, were not given the same educational opportunities as the white slave owners and other whites in general during the time period. Due to the fact that they were not able to become educated, their potential chance to be able to succeed and maintain a high class in the future are likely not be as high as others who had become educated.
