Client Description
The client system is a family that consist of Octavia Carter, her five children, and her three nieces and nephews; however, Octavia’s five other children are not part of the Child Protective Service’s case. Octavia Carter is the maternal aunt of three children, Caiden, Camia, and Dominique. Ms. Carter is a 35 year old single African American female born female. She was born and currently resides in Richmond, Virginia. Ms. Carter is unemployed and her source of income consist of government assistance and supportive financial income from the father’s of her biological children. Carter’s interventions to be derived from was Attachment Theory. Attachment theory is derived from the work of Ainsworth and Bowlby. Ainsworth and Bowlby “identified three primary patterns of infant behavior that are believed to be the outward manifestations of individuals internal working models” (Lyddon, Bradford, Nelson, 1993, pg. 390). Since Bowlby and Ainsworth, research has been done to expound on the use of attachment concepts and how important they are to the therapeutic relationship. Research has found that the worker can play an important role at establishing positive internal working models that the client can use later to respond to other relationships (Parpottas, 2012). Furthermore, attachment theory also states that “early life experiences can be activated by any close relationship, including the therapeutic relationship” (Skourteli & Lennie, 2011 pg. 21). In addition, research has also indicated that “security in attachment to the therapist was significantly associated with greater session depth and smoothness” (Skourteli & Lennie, 2011 pg. …show more content…
Carter was to “promote secure base in the client-worker relationship”. This goal was more implicit because it was indirectly related to the reason the family came to the attention to Child Protective Services. However, by improving her earned security, it was my hope to also be able to ensure that the children are growing up in a safe environment with a caregiver that is not only responsive to their physical needs, but their emotional needs; therefore, decreasing the chances of neglect. The objectives that correlate with this goal include “client will engage in extra monthly visitations” and “client will experience self-awareness regarding internal working models of attachment”. This goal and these objectives were derived from the continuous assessments I had done with Ms. Carter. Through our monthly meetings, I was able to learn more about Ms. Carter’s family of origin, as well as, the relationship that she shared with her significant other. From this information, and the help of my supervisor, I decided that some attachment based interventions would be beneficial to Ms.
