October sky was most known for the conflicts that arose through Homer's journey, the conflicts of Coalwood began to escalate as Sputnik flew over them creating a ray of hope for Homer to escape his father's expectations. This movie illustrated the conflict between Homer and his Father, Homer resisted the path of coal mining and created his own to rocket science, he faced adversity knowing his father wouldn’t be cooperative to the idea. Society also played a role in this conflict, Coalwood was a coal oriented town, which made it difficult for Homer to maintain a status of becoming a miner. The Rocket Boys strife against society began when they were accused of a crime. The Rocket Boys experienced their first setback when they were held accountable for the forest fire. Although this stopped their progress, Homer and Quentin proved their innocence with the help of Miss.Riley who provided them with the correct insights on calculus, with the right knowledge they both found that the rocket was not the cause of the fire, and cleared their names. Throughout the film John Hickam became the story’s antagonist, Homer felt aloof from his father this was one of the reasons John didn’t support his idea of Rocket Science. The movie illustrated the external conflict between Homer and his Father, John being the antagonist didn't support his son’s career choice, which led him not to provide the necessary materials Homer needed in order to successfully launch a rocket. Homer didn't let this issue put a stop to his journey, he proved to his Father just how committed he was and opened John’s eyes to see a whole other world there is beside Coalwood. Homer overcame obstacles with the help of his Friends and the constant motivation from Miss Riley which led Homer to believe he could surmount any
