One man and his crew go to war and don’t know that they won’t return home until they go through a ten year adventure where they are challenged with many obstacles. Now, the question is, is their leader a hero or an epic hero? The leader was Odysseus from the Odyssey by Homer and the ancient Greeks considered him a hero. However, he is not a modern day hero. The first reason he is not a modern day hero is because he sacrifices most of his men, he is selfish and deceptive. For example in the text it States ”Odysseus does not tell his men of Circe’s last prophecy-that he will be the only survivor of their long journey.” If Odysseus told his men that he would be the only survivor of their long journey they would of had not gone with him they would of stayed at Circe’s island. Odysseus is deceptive in his journey he doesn't tell his men they were going to die and he would be the only survivor of their journey back home. The second reason why Odysseus is not a modern day hero is because he does many unrealistic things throughout his journey. In the Odyssey by Homer he goes to the land of the dead and sees Tiresias, who will tell him the way so he can get home. For example In the text it states ”Then I addressed the blurred and breathless dead.” Odysseus is not a modern hero because he goes to places normal humans can't go
