Odysseus, the epic hero of the Odyssey, possessed a tragic flaw, hybris, which caused calamities to befall him and his crew. Because of his hybris all of his men died and he took an extra ten years to return to Ithaca. In the epic Odysseus’ hybris may have helped move the story along, but it was not in a helpful way. For example, his hybris appeared when Odysseus felt over confident and let his crew rade Thrace for gold and treasures. Clearly this is important because his raiding made the gods punish him so he faced their punishment for an excruciating ten years.
