The first time we see Odysseus’s lack of restraint is in part 1, New Coasts and Poseidon’s Son. He gives in to temptation and mocks the Cyclops. His reckless behavior endangers the lives of himself and his men. The men urge Odysseus to stop, but he refuses to listen. Polyphemus curses Odysseus and his ship. This later causes the death of the Phaeaceans as Poseidon turns their ship into a lump of stone. Later, we see him fall asleep in a cave. He doesn’t see the men kill Helios’ cattle. This upsets Helios, and Zeus is forced to punish Odysseus by destroying the ship. Odysseus stays alive, but the rest of the men are never mentioned again.
