Odysseus's Loyalty In Ithaka

In The Odyssey, Odysseus is a character who gained much loyalty from his people. Although he has been away from Ithaka for twenty years, his people still await the day their hero will come home. Penelope, Telemakhos, and Eurykleia are great examples of people who stay truly loyal to Odysseus. Penelope loves her husband and could not bare to marry a disrespectful and rude suitor. Telemakhos wants to help his father free their house from the suitors and would do anything to protect him. Eurykleia was treated respectfully by Odysseus. Although being her master, she loves him and wants him to return desperately. Odysseus relies on loyalty to show him who to trust when he comes back to his home in Ithaka. Odysseus tells her to be quiet about his return, as she is the first to know about his presents in Ithaka. She does as she is told, she does not want to ruin his grand reveal. She cannot wait for Odysseus to get rid of the un-hospitable and rude suitors. She sees the scar on Odysseus foot and immediately realizes it is him. Eventually she tells the others that, “there is one sure mark that I can tell you:/ that scar left by the boar’s tusk long ago./ I recognized it when I bathed his feet/ and would have told you, but he stopped my mouth,/ forbade me, in his craftiness./ Come down, I stake my life on it, he’s here!/ Let me die in agony if I lie!” (XXIII. 81-88). Eurykleia will do anything for Odysseus. Although it was hard for her she was quiet about his return. She has taken care of Odysseus since he was a young child and couldn't believe when she saw him return after so many years.
