Sophocles, born on 496 BC near Athens, was one of the most famous classical writers of tragedy plays in Greece. Early in his career, Sophocles acted his own plays, but soon realized that he lacked the talent and instead, took the role as a writer and created over 120 plays. However, only seven compositions survived in a fragmentary form. Antigone, Oedipus Rex, and Oedipus at Colonus are just a few of his masterpieces of literature. Generally, Sophocles wrote to cleanse emotions and enlighten people about life and fate. Altogether, Sophocles’ pieces were inspired by human nature and its welfare. Through his powerful works, Sophocles revolutionized Greek drama, while playing a huge role in Athenian society.
