Oedipus and Creon are two very similar characters. In Oedipus the King, Oedipus is a very angry man. His temper and Determination are ultimately his downfall. Creon in Antigone is a powerful man. He is the King but his pride of being the leader is what led to his downfall. If these two men would have just listened to what others were saying their stories would not have ended so tragically. Oedipus has a temper and his very determined throughout this play. He is determined to find the kill of King Lauis. When Oedipus was born he was left to die by his parents because his father, King Lauis, learned from an oracle that his son would kill him and marry his mother. Thinking that King Polybus and Queen Merope where his parents he left. While he was on the road his temper got the best of him and he killed King Laius not knowing that was his biological father. Once he killed the king, Oedipus came across a sphinx who asked him to solve a riddle. He solved the riddle and the sphinx killer herself. Thebes welcomed Oedipus as their new King. Oedipus married a woman named Jocasta, not knowing that was his mother. Later on, he city of Thebes is under a plague. King Oedipus sends his brother-in-law Creon to find out how to get rid of this plague and the oracle says they must kill the person who killed King Lauis. Oedipus is determined to find the killer and he will not give up. As people and Oedipus start to gather information on the killer, Jocasta realizes Oedipus is the killer. He is the King, his pride of being King and always being correct is what led to his downfall. In this story King Creon gives an order to bury Etcocles the proper way with military honors, Polynices, Creon considers a traitor, to be left about ground to rot. Although both of these boys were Creon’s nephews his pride as a leader was more important to him. His niece, Antigone, went against his orders and decided to bury her brother, Polynices, properly. Antigone was caught and Creon is determined to put his niece to death. His son, Haemon, tries to talk him into letting his fiancé and cousin, Antigone, live. Creon puts Antigone in a tomb alive and builds bricks up around her. Creon is then warned that what he has done the gods will not approve. Creon goes to get Antigone but it is too late. She has hung herself. Haemon then attempts to stab his father but stabs himself. Haemon did not want to live without Antigone. Once Eurydice, Creon’s wife finds out about her son’s death, she then commits suicide herself, leaving Creon without anyone important left in his life. If Creon would have let go of his pride and given Polynices a proper burial the king would still have his whole family. Instead his pride was more important to
