In the book, What I Saw and How I Lied, by Judy Blundell, contrast and contradiction is used to create suspense leading to a potential conflict regarding Joe, Evies father. Joe is normally a happy person and is never bothered by talking on the phone, but now he is. This conflict is starting to relay a theme of secrets. Since Joe is acting out of the ordinary, maybe he is hiding something that could lead to an even bigger conflict. It states, “‘Oh, for crying out loud! Next time he calls, tell him I’m not home,’ Joe said” (21). This is exemplifying how Joe is acting when the same caller keeps ringing him up. This person must have a reason to call, and maybe Joe knows that and is trying to shun him for that reason. It also states in the book,
