The historical origins of caste in the United States can be traced all the way back to the beginning of slavery and what happened after, including in this is the era of segregation. This paper explains how castes evolved in America, exploring the origins of slavery, the continuation of biased actions, and how it continues to affect our society today. I will also go on to explain my personal thoughts and reflections on how “Caste, The Origins of our Discontents” by Isabel Wilkerson has influenced my understanding of discrimination and the impact that this book had on me. I think that this was an amazing tactic used by her, it really made me feel for the people in each narrative. I believe that she used this as a way to allow the reader’s empathy to spark something within the reader. To possibly create a realization, maybe good or bad, but one that creates a lifelong change, to create and advocate for a more just society. In conclusion, this paper aims to provide a diverse overview of the historical origins of caste in the United States while including my personal reflections on this book. It has not only deepened the understanding that I have about discrimination, but it has also created a sense of responsibility within me to contribute to the social injustice that is ongoing and figure out a way to create equity within society. This book is not just a source of information, or an interesting story, it is an opportunity for readers to learn about the historical dimensions of discrimination.
