True friendship can only be attained by sacrificing for each other. Through out a relationship, people will eventually get to the point where a sacrifice needs to be made. Whether they sacrifice others or sacrifice themselves, a decision has to be made. This is not only true in life, but also in literature. For example, in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the characters George, Lennie, Candy, and his dog all reveal that true friendship is formed and kept by sacrificing for each other.
George and Lennie demonstrate that true friendship is formed and kept by sacrificing for each other. When Lennie told George he was hungry, George told him that he has some can of beans with him. Lennie asks George if he has some ketchup

Carlson is whining about how Candy's dog smells, so he decides he wants to shoot it. Candy argues that the dog has a lot of sentimental value to him since when he was a kid, so he doesn't want Carlson to shoot his dog. Eventually Carlson persuaded Candy to let him shoot his dog by telling him that he will stop the dogs suffering. Carlson said, "This ol' dog jus' suffers hisself all the time." (Steinbeck 45). Candy knew that his dog was useless and a burden to everyone, but he had a sentimental friendship with the dog which makes him not want to kill his dog. Since Candy allowed Carlson to kill his dog, Candy sacrificed himself for his dog. At first Candy's dog was sacrificing himself for Candy because it gave Candy happiness for the cost of the dog constantly suffering. Now, Candy is sacrificing himself for his dog because Candy is unhappy from his dogs death, but he stopped the dogs misery. After Carlson shot the dog, everyone became silent so Candy can have a moment to himself. It was apparent that Candy was heartbroken because "he rolled slowly over and faced the wall and lay silent." (Steinbeck 49). Candy was sad because of the sacrifice he made for his relationship between him and his dog. Although his sacrifice made him anguished, he relieved the dog from his misery. The relationship between Candy and his dog had a lot of sacrifices in
