The Harmful Innocent

As you read the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck your thoughts towards Lennie are all over the place. When you are first getting to know Lennie, he seems very innocent. Then as the story continues and you realize the controversy Lennie can cause, your predictions might change. Lennie is more harmful than George depicts him. One of the first downsides to Lennie's disability is his memory; he constantly forgets things. An example of this is that Lennie does not remember his strength is so powerful. Therefore he hurts animals and people without realizing it. Secondly he is always forgetting things that George tells him. Now sometimes he does remember, but is takes him awhile. One time his memory got him in trouble was when he encountered Curly's wife in the barn. Even though he knows not to talk to her, he ends up doing so anyway. Like I said in the paragraph above he usually forgets about it. Lennie's strength is normally what gets him in trouble. The first incident was when Lennie and George worked up north in Weed and Lennie got scared and held on to the lady's dress to tight. Then he killed multiple animals the crushed the mouse and slapped the puppy to hard. Lastly when he got frightened by Curly's wife's scream and covered her mouth, she couldn't escape and ended up suffocating. The last reason why Lennie is so dangerous is his temper. If Lennie didn't have a temper most of these events most likely wouldn't happen. One part of the book where you notice his temper is when his puppy is bit him. Lennie was angered so he hit the puppy causing it to die. Another part we see his temper happens not to long after this. Curly's wife offers to let Lennie touch her hair and when he starts to get rough she tells him to stop. Not stopping, she begins to scream which frightens Lennie, causing him to put his hand over her mouth, leading to her
