I believe he changed the title to, Mice and Men, because of the meaning of the poem. It explains how how the story goes. Lennie isn’t alone, George may not always show it but he cares for Lennie. When the quote says, “The best laid plans of mice and men go away,” it probably connects to when they talked about living off the fat of the land. The plan went away after so many things happened. When George shot Lennie he was left with grief and pain. Steinbeck saw the story in the poem, how the characters felt throughout the story.
