Impact of Racism Racism, “The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.” This quote is saying that just because of what race someone may be, racist people automatically categorize their characteristics and judge them by this as lesser, or greater than another race. In the novel, “Of Mice and Men,” the idea of racism is apparent. For instance, the foul manner, and little respect crooks experiences during his time on the ranch gives you an idea about the about the political statements about race during the time period in which the story takes place. It is plain as day that in this story Crooks is treated as a lower class person because of his race, due to the characters tone towards him, also the second class living space he is provided with. In the text it states, “Ya see the stable buck’s a nigger.”(Steinbeck, John 20) Crooks gets simply referred to a nigger, in the story this particular isn’t quite as offensive as the it has become today. However, it is still not pleasant, or something a person wishes to be called. Lack of respect is the largest issue presented from a racist standpoint through the whole of the story. A model of this from the text could be, “They let the nigger come in that night.”(Steinbeck, John 20) What this quote shows you is that it was strange that they let crooks join them for even one night, and that he is normally excluded from the rest of the ranchers, only because of the color of his skin.
