Old Major, a wise, august, and rebellious pig, inspires and leads Animal Farm to rebel and overthrow the oppressive humans. Despite being “twelve years old” and “rather stout,” Old Major is “still a majestic-looking pig” (Orwell 4). He is esteemed and admired by the other animals, as he is an influential leader. Because he is “so highly regarded on the farm,” “everyone was quite ready to lose an hour’s sleep in order to hear what he had to say” (Orwell 4). He captivates the animals attention through a long dignified speech of mutiny stating that “Man is the only real enemy we have” and he also explains how man is “the root cause of hunger and overwork” (Orwell 7).
