The moral or lesson the author is attempting to convey in the short story, “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, is the idea to not treat others who are different than you in a harsh manner, instead to treat them how you would want to be treated.

Throughout the text, multiple examples of this moral are given. As the story progresses, the author’s tone is clearly represented as a mocking tone. Marquez mocks the townspeople, along with Pelayo and Elisenda, about their treatment of the angel. For instance, Marquez mocks Pelayo and Elisenda when he describes their feelings about the angel, “They then felt magnanimous and decided to put the angel on a raft with fresh water and provisions for three days…(paragraph 4).”
