As citizens of the United States, we are privileged to have a democratic government; because we are able to express our opinions unlike a monarchy or dictatorship. Compared to a democratic government, which is led by the people, a monarchy is led by a king or queen, and a dictatorship is led by a powerful ruler. Both of these would be considered autocracy, since all the power is decided by one individual. Another type of government that is quite different from democracy would be oligarchy, which is when a small group of people have control over the government. Even though oligarchy is not just one person, it is a group of people that decide what is “best” for the people of that country. If opinions other the governments are shared, this could led to harsh rules or punishments. This would definitely tie in with the worth of an individual, which is not present in an oligarchy or autocracy government, but it is present in a democracy. Another basic rule of democracy is majority rule and minority rights. In a democracy, a majority rule gets to make the decisions, however, out of respect the minority is still listened to so that the end result could be best and most educated decision for both sides. This would also led to compromising. Without compromise, many decisions would be one-sided and irrational. The last, but not the least concept of democracy is freedom. Freedom is a highly important part of democracy because without The Bill of Rights, the Constitution, and other important documents, we would not have to freedom of speech, religion, the rights of those accused of crime, press, and so forth.
