In September of 1976, the Mid-Valley School District began the school year with five schools. There was an elementary in each of the three boroughs: Dickson City, Olyphant, and Throop. Students in seventh through ninth grades attended the Mid-Valley Junior High School which was the former Dickson City Junior High School. Students in tenth through twelfth grades attended the Mid-Valley Senior High School which was former Olyphant Junior High School, and is now the Lackawanna Heritage Apartments.
The Olyphant Elementary was sometimes referred to as the Mid-Valley Elementary School in Olyphant. The original part of the building was located at the corner of Church and Susquehanna. It was designed by Lewis Hancock, Jr., and was built in 1910. In 1915 an annex was completed that extended the building to the corner of Susquehanna and Lincoln. The annex was designed by Edward H. Beginning in September of 1978, the district started to use the former St. Patrick’s School on Delaware Avenue for grades seven and eight. This building is now used by the Visiting Nurses Association. The senior high school was mainly used by ninth through twelfth graders, but students in seventh and eighth grades used the gyms. There were four classrooms in St. Patrick’s Church basement. One was the Olyphant kindergarten, the other three classrooms were used for junior high school classes.
