In the essay “Is Google Making Us Stupid?,” Nicholas Carr discusses how technologies nowadays have changed the way people think, speak, read, and write. For instance, Carr mentions that he and his friends experienced a change in how they read after spending a long time on the internet. By giving many examples, Carr emphasizes that this is not his problem alone, but it is everyone’s problem. In fact, people nowadays spend less time reading books and newspaper as they are too familiar with using technology. For example, since 1955 when the first TV was introduced, people has spent more time on this new type of entertainment and lost more interest in reading newspaper. For instance, Eighner points out that he finds many useful material from the Dumpsters, such as a new sewing kit, good books, magazines, and canned food that is eatable. It seems that people nowadays are unaware of their wasteful use of resources as they throw away too many new and useful material and even food that can still be used. Also, many food and soft drinks are often thrown away even when they are new after every parties. This indicates that people spend too little time about what they buy and throw away. In fact, Eighner proposes another problem in saying that people get attracted to many things so easily and buy them even when they rarely use them. Thus, people usually end up throw away food or material that they bought a long time ago simply because it is outdated or everyone around them have something better. In brief, people try to acquire more and more material mostly because of the desire to get what other people get and hence will result in the tendency to throw away many material and food in the future without truly use
