On Jim Mccormick's Breaking Through Uncertanty-Welcome Adversity

Part of human nature is taking risks to overcome a conflict. In “Breaking Through Uncertanty-Welcome Adversity” By Jim Mccormick an in “Neighbours” by Lien Chao both demonstrate the benefits and outcomes of taking risks. In Mccormick’s story he saves his own life by taking a risk, which teaches him about himself. At the same time in Chao’s story the main character Sally takes a significant risk which gains her friends and confidence. Whilst both character benefits from taking risks, Maccormick shows how he benefits the greatest by taking risks.

Both texts display the outcome of taking risk, however, one text shows the greater personal and physical gain of taking risks. In “Breaking Through Uncertainty--Welcome Adversity” the main character, Jim Maccormick a skydiver shows how he benefited from taking a very serious risk. Mccormick took the life-threatening risk of abandoning his main parachute in an attempt to release his emergency parachute, in an attempt to stop him from falling to his death. He understood the “urgency of [his] situation.” He used his courage and overcame his natural instincts to not cut the only thing keeping him alive, he overcame his fears and “deploy [his] reserve parachute”(para) thus saving his life. Despite being in such a difficult situations, Sally maintains a her positive mind by confronting their fears; she takes a risk and finds good friends named Joe and Elizabeth who “give her hugs and kisses.” Sally took the risk a gained new friends which untimely made her more pronounced in the town. Instead of hiding herself from the people of the town she would “smile broadly at her [the] neighbors” (para 45).
