This photograph Confederate Soldier [on the Battlefield at Antietam] by Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) is dated September 1862 “was published by Brady as a carte-de-visite-a small, inexpensive, and extremely popular format for portrait photographs during the 1860s and 1870s” and currently this innovative shot is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City (metmuseum.org). Museum Garnder’s image serves as a creative response to war primarily because it shows the horrifying aftermath of the Battle of Antietam which was considered one of the bloodiest wars of history although, this image is a sad reality of the hundreds of men that died to serve for what they believed in. Nevertheless, this image still has a strong courageous appearance for the reason that those hundreds of men risked their lives. Furthermore, this picture is of a young confederate soldier that had been wounded and had drug himself to a ravine where he later would die. In which I can image was horrific. In addition the emotions of those of the families of those lost in war. This image gives a little in site what the battle field would have looked like. Unfortunately, photos back in the 1800’s did not have color like we do today therefore making it not as gory as it could be just because you cannot see the blood or even the wound of the young man. Also, the image gives off a sense of humankind was somewhat disposable and that we as humans need to fight to defend our side no matter if you are young or old.
