On The Rez Analysis

In the short story, “On The Rez “Author Ian Frazier says that equality and justice do not live until they are expressed in action. Quoted from paragraph 10, “we make the leap from our tribe or group” into a larger community that “different people share”. SuAnne was heroic and very brave to stand up for her religion and her tribe. She took a leap and opened people eyes to something more powerful and overwhelming then plain foolish mockery. I know someone quite well that is a bit similar to SuAnne in the short story On the Rez. She was brave and available to new experiences that led her into deep complications as well as simple ones. Moving from Wyandanch New York, to Memphis Tennessee was a tremendous leap, and also very challenging. During the transfer I didn’t know what to or not to expect, I was excited, yet not sure if I was prepared or ready. One of the biggest problems I had was being told that I talk funny, all throughout my high school year I was either mocked or talked about because of my vocabulary and completing my sentences. though I speak English I was always told that I talk too proper or even sometimes told I talk white. The mockery bothered me through 9th, 10th grade. I was told things like “go back to New York” “stop pretending to talk like that” and things I rather not bring to discussion. My 11th grade year I put a name on myself other than the “funny talking New York girl”, I began to partake into sports such as Volleyball, Track and field and managing a basketball team. I also volunteered for concession stands, helped in the school office and was a big help to the principal. My name started to become more respected, especially as I started to show my talents of singing and dancing at the school, I sung the national anthem plenty of times, danced in programs as well as shows, becoming the basketball homecoming queen was goal that I was proud to complete, but the biggest goal was to make it through the mockery and for people to notice me without noticing my words so much.
