On pages 323-324 of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, Chief regains his freedom by breaking a window in the ward of the hospital and manages to escape. He runs as far as he could and did not turn back to help any of his fellow patients escape with him. He knew that the hospital would not send anyone after him because he was an AWOL, and he did not need to be sprinting away, but he did not stop for miles. The way that Chief runs away from the hospital after breaking free displays Kesey’s idea that when a man breaks away from control, he will try to take as much of the freedom as he can, and go as far away as possible.
