The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas is a short story by Ursula Le Guin that depicts a utopian society and how it works. In this story the people are utilitarian’s and are very focused on their happiness even though they know there are consequences for they happiness. This story poses questions like is the society moral and is an evil always bad if it brings good to almost everyone? I think that happiness is a necessity to all human life and should be pursued even if there are some consequences. This story takes place in a city called Omelas during a summer festival and paints a picture of a very happy and thriving society. It talks about how the happiness has brought great knowledge to the people of this city; however, the people have made this deal with someone or something to gain all of this happiness that effects only one person of this society in a negative way. A half-starved child is kept in a cage under the city in darkness by himself and forced to live in the worst conditions possible with no communication with anybody. Almost every adult that lives in the city knows of this consequence and feel that it is a necessary evil and continue to live their life’s. In this story the majority of the people are utilitarian’s and are very focused on their happiness even though they know there are consequences for they happiness, however, there are also Kantians in the story and they end up leaving the city because they feel the consequences for happiness aren’t moral. This story challenges its readers to better understand where they fit in their opinion about morality and if something evil can be moral if it brings happiness. I believe that if an evil must occur to better a whole society that that evil can in certain circumstances be moral making me take a utilitarian view in this
