Since the creation of social media, the popularity has increased exponentially, with top social media sites gaining over 2.6 billion users since 2004. While people from across the world were suddenly able to communicate through these social media sites, this epidemic has also led to the theory that social media has caused an increased amount of loneliness. In a study done in 2014 by Gallup, a research-based consulting company, participants were asked for the number of “close” friends with the average numbers of friends being two. This is drastically different from the same study taken in 2001, with the average of participants having around ten or more “close” friends. Online dating has become so popular for a multitude of reasons such as the level of convenience and the need for instant gratification(maybe define). With online dating sites such as tinder, the desire for a stable relationship has quickly deplenished. Not only has the social need of stable relationships disappeared, but the use and development of social skills (enter quote) of the younger generation has also declined.”Online dating: a critical analysis from the perspective of psychological science” argues that because of online dating we are beginning to “fail to capture those experiential aspects of social interaction that are essential to evaluating one’s compatibility with potential partners.” Rejection is such a strong emotion that it can be felt physically and this is common emotion found in the world of dating. The fear of rejection is one of the leading causes as to why the popularity of online dating has increased so dramatically. The fear of rejection is much lower and hold less of an impact on an individual's confidence when happening through a computer screen as opposed to face to face. Online dating has drastically changed interpersonal relationships.
