In many species, males compete for dominance and for a mate. The evolution of ornaments and weapons generally has acted in favor of female choice for courtship. However, there are instances where the females will not care whether the male can be successful in male-male competition. For this experiment, the Onthophagus taurus beetles were tested to see what factors affected the success in male fights and whether the victor was preferred by females. The male beetles were placed in an artificial tunnel and were observed to see which male would win or if it was a tie.
