For a while during World War 2, Germany seemed like they were going to win the war in impressive fashion and end up taking over the entire continent of Europe. Germany ran roughshod across Europe using their blitzkrieg strategy and genius warfare tactics. However, some of Hitler’s decisions ended up backfiring later in the war, causing their downward spiral. Of Hitler’s mistakes, his decision to push Japan into attacking America, his attempt to take over Russia, and falling for the trap that set up D-Day were the keys to Germany’s demise.

One of the things that caused Germany to lose the war was Hitler’s choice to invade Russia, called Operation Barbarossa. Up until this attempted invasion, Germany had been enjoying a streak of military wins and they had a non-aggression pact with the Soviets. Early on in the invasion Germany looked strong, and by mid-June of 1941 Hitler’s army had come within only 200 miles of Russia. However, as winter came Germans were slowed by the cold weather and suffered severe frostbite due to not having the proper clothing for the environment. This caused Japan to attack Pearl Harbor on December 7,1941 and awake the sleeping giant that was America. The reasoning behind Hitler’s plan was that if Japan attacked America then America would focus all their forces on Japan, so that some of the burden would’ve been taken off of the Germans. However, this plan ended up completely backfiring on Germany, as America would enter the war and they would go straight for Germany.
