In early August 1990 Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein ordered the invasion of neighboring Kuwait. Arab powers such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt asked the U.S. and other Western nations to intervene. The Persian Gulf War began with a massive U.S. led air offensive known as Operation Desert Storm. On February 28, president bush declared a cease fire, and by that time most Iraqi forces in Kuwait had either surrendered or fled. Kuwait and Iraq suffered enormous damage from the war. The war began because Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. Hussein accused Kuwait of taking and stealing Iraqi petroleum. He wanted the Kuwaiti islands of Bubyan and Warba, which would be another harbor. He demanded access to the islands and to the part of the Rumaila oilfield that ran across Kuwait and Iraq. On 2 August, Kuwait refused these demands so Iraq invaded. …show more content…
Iraq was by itself trying to invade Kuwait. Kuwait had the United States, Britain, Egypt, France, and Saudi Arabia as allies. The United States were a huge player in this war. With their air attack desert storm. The major leader in Iraq was Saddam Hussein who ordered the invasion of Kuwait. President Bush was a huge leader in the war. Bush ordered the air attacks know as desert storm. Also the president of Egypt Hosni Mubarak who sent troops to help support Kuwait was a major leader. In Operation Desert Storm over 500,000 American troops were deployed in Saudi Arabia in case of an Iraqi attack. The Iraqi forces had little opportunity to defend against the air attacks. Also groundbreaking technology, the GPS helped to pinpoint hits by the Tomahawk missile and other weapons. The damage from the attacks were devastating to Hussein’s Republican Guard.
