The United States and Southern Vietnam versus Northern Vietnam, a battle against the communist views the North believed in. An estimated one billion dollar invested in making Operation Rolling Thunder go into full force. President Lyndon Johnson was in charge of making the speech to address the public of what had been occurring over in Vietnam regarding our troops and the actions we planned on taking. Operation Rolling Thunder was our plan of action, how we would convert the minds of the Viet Cong away from their communistic thought processes and more towards capitalistic mind sets. To help the Southern Vietnamese people we sent over assistant, which President Johnson had explained in his speech to the public why we must risk our lives to help the people over in Southern Vietnam. The strategic bombing was in short bursts of multiple bombs being dropped within a singular region. America found this to be of assistance towards the South, and to help destroy the North but little did they know, it wouldn’t be of much assistance. The first aerial was commenced on March 2, 1965; America’s goal was to increase the pressure on the North Vietnamese leadership, and to negotiate for a peaceful settlement between North and South Vietnam. After the first strike, the bombings continued over a course over several months; in hope that the communist government of North Vietnam would surrender or sign a peace treaty with South Vietnam. For the first month of the bombing the main targets of the bombings were locations below the 19th parallel.
