According to Allan Johnson privilege is when a group of people whom have an advantage which is denied to others because of the group they belong too, rather then actions they have done. Oppression is the social concept which pressures people to keep them in a strict box and prevents them from pursing opportunities to lead a good life. In my life I have been privileged with education because I have easy access to school and to the necessary tools for success. For example, my high school is two blocks away from my home making it very easy to commute. This demonstrates privilege because many other students cannot commute to school or there are no available schools to attend. In addition, throughout my education I have always had and been able to afford the needed tools; including, textbooks, technology, and school supplies. According to Annette Lareau, author of the article "Invisible Inequality,” the upper class is able to afford prestigious school systems and valuable structured activities. Children experiencing oppression are less involved and do not have education advantages, leading to less opportunities. An example of oppression on the lower class is a student in my Campus Kids program expressed he could not complete his homework because he did not have any pencils or paper. In addition, social ties can cause oppression on the lower class. In the article, "The Saints and the Roughnecks," by William Chambris the Saints (upper class) are respected by the school and community members even though they exhibit delinquent behavior, equal to that of the Roughnecks. The Roughnecks have weak social ties and were consistently persecuted by the school and community. The Roughnecks experienced oppression because their economic status caused them to be viewed differently, limiting their academic and economic
