Ordnance branch was acknowledge as one of the army branches in May 14 1812 under the command of Colonel Decius Wadsworth was given title of Commissary General of Ordnance. But the tasks of the branch date by way before they were acknowledge. Ordnance dates back to the colonial era where Samuel Sharpe was appointed as Master Gunner of Ordnance in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1629. Since then the ordnance branch has built, supplied and maintenance the weapons and ammunition of the army. Ordnance is the one of the largest branch of the army. “The U.S. Army Ordnance Corps mission is to support the development, production, acquisition, and sustainment of weapon systems, ammunition, missiles, electronics, and ground mobility material during peace and war to provide combat power to the U.S. Army” (Bonn 160) The ordnance branches emblem is the Shell and Flame one of the oldest in the army. The insignia represents not a bomb, but an iron hand grenade with a powder charge and a fuse which had to be lit before throwing. It lasts sixteen weeks and four days. It focuses on Officer Professional Development, Leadership, Management of Maintenance and Ammunition, Supply and other Logistics Operations, and basic Tactics. The first six weeks are tactics. The last week of tactics is for the FTX. Then the rest of the weeks are ordnance functional training. Maintenance Management Ammunition Management Logistics Exercise. Then the last couple weeks before graduation are both exercise and field exercise that incorporate the maintenance, ammunition and logistics that were learned the previous
