Organized crime groups have been in operation now for over several hundreds of years. The typical groups that many think of when they hear the word organized crime would be biker gangs or the Italian mafia. These traditional groups, at the time, were focused on local issues such as prostitution, drug trafficking, and violence. As time as progressed these groups began to change their motives and focus more on international or transnational crime. This allowed them to continue their original operations and introduce new concepts, such as cybercrime, and it would include a much broader area of coverage. This organization tends to stay away from the petty crimes such as theft, burglary, and robbery but deals with drug trafficking, human trafficking, prostitution, gambling, violence, cybercrime, etc. The Yakuza are a unique criminal organization as they are very open to the public about their existence and reputation. Not only does this group have a significant impact on the culture, society and financial areas of Japan, but it also influences us here in Canada. Originally, the Yakuza “were a pure family that consisted of Japanese and Korean ethnicities” (Siniawer, 2012). As time has progressed, the need for diversity has skyrocketed. The Yakuza are an open crime syndicate group that does not discriminate. Their applications for membership are open to anyone, of any race. The main reason why this has occurred is the fact that the Yakuza have become a global crime group and the need for language skills is an asset. In order to do business deals and communicate with people from other countries, the Yakuza will need specific members not only to communicate, but also to understand the culture, politics, and build rapports with possible business partners. There is also the benefit of using people of different colour or race in order to blend in with crowds, establish relationships, or execute violent operations.
