Origen of Alexandria was one the greatest theologians that ever lived. He influenced many people. He was one of the first people to produce opinions concerning important matters in the Christian faith. He proved to stay true to his faith during a time of great persecution in the church which shows his devotion to Christianity. He lived through a difficult time in the Christian church. The church was greatly persecuted, there was little to no consensus on the doctrine, and Gnosticism thrived. There were many opinions regarding the faith and each group claimed that each possessed the correct knowledge. Origen proved, through many trials and tribulations, to be influential, caring, and diligent in his mission to pursue Christ.
Origen was born around 185 A.D. near Alexandria (Origen.) During this time the stability of the Roman Empire was threatened by barbarian invasions and Christian persecution (Moore Origen of Alexandria.) He was the oldest child of seven and was raised in a Christian home. He was well educated in the biblical studies. His father, Leonidas, who died a martyr, inspired Origen to have the same goal as himself (Origen.)
