Original Sin is the result of Adam and Eve's disobedience of God's will. It is referred to as the fall of mankind and means that every person in the world is tainted by Adam and Eve's actions. Original Sin also expresses the fact that since we are tainted both morally and ethically from birth that the only way we can be rescued is by God's grace. "Evil is the nature of mankind"(Hawthorne). In the story "Young Goodman Brown" it takes place at the end of the 17th century in Salem and is about a man who takes a dangerous journey into the wilderness and ultimately finds out that his beliefs about faith and evil in the world are flawed. In the story "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" it takes place in 1940's Georgia and is about this grandmother and her beliefs being tested. While the grandmother and her family are traveling down to Florida they crash and encounter The Misfit who just escaped from jail and is a killer. In both stories, Original Sin which is our inherited sin because of Adam's disobedience towards God's command to not eat from the Tree of Knowledge is shown throughout multiple times. Some examples include Young Goodman Brown's own fall because of his actions to go into the forest even though he knew it was evil. The old man also represents a darker and doubting side of Young Goodman Brown towards his faith which is what leads him to keep going further and further into the forest to find the truth. This desire to find this truth shows that really he is tainted by Original Sin just as everyone else is and it shows the danger of abandoning his faith in allegorical form.
