Junot Diaz’s novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao overall theme is love but with the death of a character it allows the reader to understand the character a lot easier. In most novels the reader is rooting for the protagonist to finally get what they deserve and this novel is no different. The death of the main character, Oscar De Leon, comes to a shock and with that it changes the entire meaning of the book. Love is something someone should get to experience even fictional characters but when death takes that away it helps the reader understand and appreciate the value of love, something Oscar wanted to experience. When Oscar dies the mood changes from uncertainty to relief and clarity. The lesson of love was unclear until Oscar’s death. It leaves the meaning of the book clearly if it was not for his death the meaning would not be as profound: despite the suffering and death love is our happiness. It was not until the death scene where the reader was able to understand how Oscar felt towards love. Throughout the novel Oscar is uncertain about love because he has not yet experienced it but when he does (leading up to his death) he feels a sense of relief and clarity because he is able to value the beauty of love for what it is. The significance of his death causes the shift in mood which is crucial to the understanding of why many of the characters suffered and or died because of love. Because of Oscar’s death was caused by love it leaves the reader to identify the lesson: do not take love for granted. Diaz wanted the reader to understand the lesson of love through the death of the main character. Oscar’s death was crucial to the development of the overall lesson because it shows that one should cherish the time they have to love since they never know when it will be taken away from you. Oscar knew the danger of loving someone he should not have but because of his death Diaz was able to reveal the overall lesson of love.
