In the 1995 film adaptation of Othello director Oliver Parker uses many different storytelling devices to strengthen scenes in the film that are harder for readers to understand in the play. Parker uses clever symbolism, visual aides, and the use of light and dark to help intensify the immortality of the play. Audiences are engulfed in a tragic story filled with deception and hate. Jealousy drives Shakespeare’s play which has made it relatable to audiences throughout time. One of the most memorable scenes in the film that was not in the play was when Iago is coming up with his scheme take down Othello. Iago played by Kenneth Branagh, places a black King chess piece (Othello) and a white Queen chess piece (Desdemona) together only to put the White Knight piece (Cassio) between the two. The movie features Othello’s thoughts which are filled with vivid images of adultery. Othello thinks he finds Desdemona with Cassio in his bed. As the images dash through Othello’s mind he sits up quickly in bed and the audience realizes he just had a bad dream. Since this scene never happened in the play it helps viewers get the idea of what exactly is going through Othello’s mind. His worst fear is that Desdemona doesn’t love him and has fallen in love with Cassio. His dream serves as his hard evidence that such a thing could happen especially since Desdemona is good friends with the charming Cassio. Similarly, Iago's comments to the viewers showcase his villainy intentions with much more significance. Iago destroys Othello because of his own obsession with power.
