Otto Dix: Destroying Art

One of these artists in specific seemed to be Doherty's favorite, “A 1920 montage-painting by the Dresden based artist and lose associate of Berlin Dadaists, Otto Dix, shows a publish of the written work in a gutter not far from a blind and limbless World War I veteran attempting to sell matches on the street”(78). Even though this artwork could be considered or critiqued as crude and vivid it shows Dix's display of contempt for the political situation and the position of art itself. Doherty draws a connection between the Dada movement so called “destroying art”(81), and the written work talking about putting an end to the violence that is causing works of art to be destroyed. She agrees with other Dadaists of that time in Germany that would have preferred the paintings to be destroyed in the crossfire rather than innocent lives in residential areas. The first one that I would like to look at would have to be his most famous piece which is titled Fountain and was made in 1917 for a competition that he entered it into anonymously. The artwork that I would like to compare to this is one of his earlier pieces that seemed to be one of his first in this style. This piece was made in 1912 and was titled Bicycle Wheel. This piece consisted of a wooden stool that he drilled a hole into the seat of and placed a bicycle wheel upside down and into it. Even though both of the objects the stool and the bicycle wheel were already made objects that he got at a store, Duchamp still needed to come up with the idea in his head and for this piece in particular he had to drill the hole and glue the wheel in place.
