Nicholas Kristof, the writer behind Our Blind Spot about Guns, describes how Americans turn a blind eye to gun laws and regulations. Kristof describes how the increase of regulation on automobiles has reduced the annual death rates by 95%; Kristof claims, “by my calculations we would have 715,000 Americans dying annually in vehicle accidents” (161). Furthermore, he uses this information to encourage, the regulation on guns. Kristof’s readers claim “Cars kill people, too, so why not ban cars?” Kristof’s response to this is that he is not trying to take guns away, just to make them safer for the common man.
Nicholas Kristof has some points. However, his comparison of vehicles to guns is lacking significance. Cars have a purpose, to transport one from point a to point b, cars are transportation tools.
