Lots of people are ignorant to the world around them. They don't realize the cause of their actions. Authors sometimes portray this into their writing. Like the book Out of my mind and the poem Making Sarah Cry. These text show a similar theme yet the protagonist in the stories have very different problems, or disabilities, big or small. Which should be treated the same. This relates to our theme- treat others the way you want to be treated. That both authors show us. The author of Making Sarah Cy shows is that we should treat others the way you want to be treated. In the beginning of this poem a boy and his friends, make fun of a girl named Sarah, because she has a difficulty learning. After a while of this teasing happening, the boy, who was making fun of Sarah, has a bike accident. Draper. In this novel a girl named Melody is disabled and in a wheelchair. She goes to the aquarium with Rose, a new friend, and her family including her babysitter/friend/neighbor Mrs. V. As Melody is exploring the aquarium with everyone she sees two girls from her school. She then gets nervose about them seeing her. The girls then make fun of Melody but nobody stops them. Until Mrs. V gets tired of the teasing and stands up for Melody. In the text it states that Mrs. V said: "Some people have braces on their teeth. Some get braces of their legs... You're a lucky girl to only have messed up teeth." The girls then leave the aquarium and everything settles down. Mrs. V tells them to be grateful, that everyone has disabilities and differences. Even if it is as small as braces. She shows them that everyone has imperfections, but they are all still humans. Mrs. V speech taught us to treat others the way you want to be treated- the theme that both authors
