Although everyone has his or her own advantages in his or her life, the example Outliers show if someone can take advantage of what he or she has then he or she would have a chance of success. Malcolm Gladwell suggested in the Outliers, “… if you work hard enough and assert yourself, and use your mind and imagination, you can shape the world to your desires” (Gladwell 151). Even though the world is not fair to everyone, after reading Outliers it has given me some hopes that the world is not as badly skewed towards a specific group of people, and everyone has an equal chance at becoming successful.
Divergent brainstorming skills are as important as common smarts. A test like SAT or GMAT is written based on convergent skills; for example: solving logic problems. Naming the uses of a brick is as difficult as any problems on an SAT test, but that kind of problems is harder to measure in a short standardize test; therefore, those kinds of questions are not commonly used. This change the way I view the world because this shows that everyone is smart in his or her own way, but not in the way others usually measure smarts. Bill Gates might be the best programmer and businessman at Microsoft; however, he might not be the best person to design a logo or the web page for Microsoft. If the Jewish man had risen to the top of commoditizing, but worked in an irrelevant industry that is difficult; it is likely to lead nowhere. Those men would not be one of the stories of success in the Outliers. Because the Jewish man started out on their own with a good work ethic, they are at the top of New York law firms in the 1950s.
