The idea of outside control is a common theme seen in a plethora of classic plays. In Shakespeare's Hamlet and King Lear, the element of madness wholly controls the protagonist. In Hamlet, the titular character decides that the only way for his curious actions to look innocent is to put on an ‘antic disposition’. Throughout the play, Hamlet seems to lose control of his life and truly becomes mad. Other characters, like Hamlet’s love interest Ophelia, also lose control of their own lives and minds. This theme of madness is derived from the uncertainty of the play.
